Board Support Package for the Atmel® AVR® Studio Available for Download on May 9th
SUNNYVALE, Calif., May 2, 2011 – InvenSense, Inc., the leading solution provider of MotionProcessors™ for consumer electronics, today announced its Embedded MotionApps™ Platform library software (Embedded MPL), optimized for embedded microcontroller applications. Based on the InvenSense production-hardened MotionApps™ Platform for smartphones and tablets, Embedded MPL and the companion MPU-3000™ and MPU-6000™ MotionProcessors provide a complete solution that delivers 6-axis MotionFusion™ data encompassing 3-axis gyroscopes and accelerometers, optimized for 8-bit embedded microcontrollers with limited MIPS and memory. An estimated 200 million devices will be shipped over the next 4 years into products such as TV remotes, toys and wearable sensors for health, wellness and fitness. MotionProcessing will be the key enabler for these applications, creating new and powerful ways for users to control and communicate with these small form factor devices. Embedded MPL addresses major development challenges and helps accelerate development and time to market by providing a complete solution.
Traditionally, the challenge for developers has centered on managing the complexities of processing raw sensor data and the development of algorithms for sensor fusion and motion sensor calibration. Embedded MPL tackles these challenges head-on by providing system developers a solution encompassing software, algorithms, BSPs for leading microcontroller architectures and a simple Application Programming Interface (API) for data access and control. In conjunction with our first partner, Atmel® Corporation, InvenSense will release a BSP for the Atmel AVR® Studio and Xplained development kits starting May 9th to provide developers and researchers with a robust and design-ready platform.

In the past couple of years embedded systems designers have integrated motion sensors such as gyroscopes for yaw stability in toy helicopters or accelerometers for pedometer devices. However, today, there is a need for more sophisticated applications requiring various motion sensors and needs for sensor fusion. Embedded MPL offers controls for critical MotionProcessing tasks through APIs for sensor device management, bias calibration and 6-axis MotionFusion allowing for fastest development and time to market. Offloading MotionFusion to the MPU-3000 or MPU-6000 embedded Digital Motion Processor (DMP™) allows the microcontroller to focus all its available bandwidth on processing core application tasks and reduces CPU utilization by as much as 10x and I2C traffic by as much as 3x, thus enabling a cost-effective solution to be deployed. Embedded MPL small code size allows the software to run on the existing microcontrollers, thus eliminating the need for additional hardware for MotionProcessing tasks.
